It is named after the Mat River, that flows through the district. It has a population of 48,803〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=POPULLSIA SIPAS RRETHEVE, 2001-2010 )〕 (2010 estimate), and an area of 1,029 km². Its capital is Burrel. When Skanderbeg began his rebellion against Ottomans he also became the lord of Mat and some other territories as well.
